When the Light Comes On ~ John 8:1-12

What happens when the light comes on? In John 8:1-12, we encounter one of the most gripping scenes in all of Scripture -- a woman caught in adultery, dragged before Jesus by religious leaders who are certain they have both her and him trapped. But Jesus, who declares himself the light of the world, does something unexpected. Instead of reacting, he stoops down and writes in the sand. Instead of condemning, he turns the spotlight around. This passage peels back the layers of two very different kinds of darkness: the open, visible sin of one woman, and the hidden, self-righteous sin of those holding the stones. The spiritual lesson here cuts deep -- it is far easier to point the light outward than to let it shine inward. As we walk through this story, we are reminded that none of us are beyond the reach of Romans 3:23, that all have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. The Pharisees knew the law perfectly and still missed the point entirely. Knowing the Bible and having a Christlike spirit are not the same thing, and this story forces us to ask which one we are actually pursuing.
