The Gospel of John: Rise Up

In John chapter 5, we encounter a powerful story that challenges us to examine what we're truly waiting for in our spiritual lives. At the Pool of Bethesda, a man had been paralyzed for 38 years, waiting by the water with hundreds of other sick and hurting people, all hoping for a miracle. When Jesus asks him, 'Do you want to be made whole?' it seems like an obvious question—but it reveals something deeper. This man had been looking for healing in all the wrong places: in the water, in other people, in circumstances beyond his control. How often do we do the same? We wait for the perfect relationship, the right amount of money, more time, or better circumstances before we fully surrender to God's plan. The transformative moment comes when Jesus simply commands, 'Rise, take up your bed, and walk'—and the man must choose to obey without seeing the full picture. This passage reminds us that God is always working, even when we can't see it. The greatest miracle isn't just physical healing; it's the spiritual transformation that happens when we pass from death unto life through faith in Christ. We're challenged to stop waiting on insufficient solutions and start worshiping an all-sufficient Savior who knows our name, our story, and our pain.
